Thrills and Spills

The incomparable limestone formations of the Krabi area make for spectacular scenery as well as opportunities for an almost endless array of leisure and extreme sports activities. Everything from sunbathing to sea kayaking to helicopter tours of the famous 'James Bond Island' (made famous in the classic Bond film The Man With the Golden Gun) is available from a comfortable base in Krabi, or nearby Phang Nga. You may even choose to do a tandem skydive if your budget stretches that far. It's not difficult to imagine a life of luxury as seen in the James Bond spy film franchise, especially as most westerners will find that their money lasts a lot longer in South East Asia than it does at home. Perhaps while you're daydreaming and drinking fruity cocktails on your sun lounger, you will imagine your own Aston Martin experience .

While the white-sand beaches may be an absolute pleasure, the one thing that Thailand seems to lack is luxury vehicles. There are an inconceivably high number of scooters and motorcycles in use by both locals and tourists, and it's difficult to comprehend why there aren't more road accidents than the statistics show. Thankfully, new helmet and passenger rules have been implemented lately, and this will reduce sightings of a family of six all crammed on to one rusty old two-wheeled vehicle, with their market purchases dangling from flailing limbs. All this means that your chances of taking part in a Ferrari experience are slim to none, especially on the islands.

If you do happen to hire a scooter while on holiday, make sure you arrange a fair deal with the hire company, ensure you both discuss any existing damage on the bike, and, most importantly, wear a helmet! It may seem 'safe' because you are in a tropical paradise, and unlikely to go over 50 kilometres per hour, but you never know what's going to be coming around the next corner (and a long and painful trip to the nearest hospital puts something of a dampener on an island holiday). It's difficult to picture, but sometimes the winding, narrow roads can make it feel like a Porsche experience. Well, in terms of perceived speed, not in terms of luxury! The main thing is to look after your own safety, and that of your friends. Oh, and if you were thinking you might get to drive a Lotus on this trip, it might be best to leave that adventure for when you get home.
